1. The recruits can't tell the difference between each shell, bomb, and they hesitate too much and stay bunched together instead of scattering.
2. When Paul finds Himmelstoss, he is pretending to be hurt. He is terrified of being on the front.
3.Himmelstoss starts to act nice to Paul and Tjaden because he showed that he is afraid of the front when Paul and Tjaden aren't as cowardly.
The recruits are inexperienced and lack several important skills such as hesitating too much, they cant tell the difference between shells and they bunch up. If they dont learn these skills quickly they will not survive long.
Paul finds Himmelstoss avoiding the front by pretending to be hurt because he is afraid of being on the front.
Himmelstoss acts nicely to them because he is more afraid then Paul and Tjaden are of the front.
