1) The soldiers were given new clothes when the Kaiser visits the troops.
2) When Paul gets lost, he finds a shell hole and pretends to be dead. When the other soldier enters the ditch, Paul stabs him and later he covers up the soldiers wounds because he is not dying.
3) The dead soldier had a picture of a women and a child in his pocket as well as letters that Paul reads.
