Summarizer

1. After being on the front and seeing what its really like, Himmelstoss starts to act nicer and generous to the soldiers. He becomes the cook and gives more food to them.

2. Paul goes back to his home. He doesn't feel right because of the experiences he has had in the war. He tries not to talk to anyone about the war. Paul tells Kemmerich's mother that he died. He lies by saying that he died a fast death without suffering. Towards the end of his leave he sees that his mother is deeply saddened that Paul has to go back to war. Paul wishes he never went on leave because of the sadness he sees that his mother has.

3. There is a prison next to the training camp Paul is in. He sees the prisoners which make him sad because they all look innocent and honest just like he is.

4. Paul's dad and sister visits him. His dad tells him that his mother is in the hospital for treatment of her cancer. The dad and sister give Paul potato cakes that his mom made him. He is so depressed he doesn't want to eat them but remembers that his mom worked hard to make them even through her illness. He gives two cakes to the prisoners and eats the rest himself.

1. Himmelstoss started off as a mean leader. Which Paul even says in the beginning of the book that he believes hes mean like that becasue of his height. He says short people are more apt to be strict. But as time went on Himmelstoss became more welcoming to the guys, even cooking for them.

2. The returning home really hurt Paul. It was tough for him to leave becasue he had to see his mother in pain. She was so depressed to see him leave.

3. Paul continues to expierence the horrors of war, now seeing innocent POWs.

4.Paul recieves unexpected news when he hears that his mother is sick in the hosptail. This is something Paul really doesnt want to hear right now, becasue he cant do anything to help.

1. Himmelstoss used to be strict and harsh. He wants to be on "good terms" with them. He ends up replacing the sergeant-cook and makes more food for them.

2. Going on leave was awkward for Paul. He was too used to his life on the front. His mother is also sick; she has cancer. He feels like everything about his life has changed since the war and doesn't feel at home anymore.

3. Paul knows what it is like for prisoners of war and he realizes that not all of his "enemys" are bad.

4. Paul now realizes how sick his monther is and it's hard for him. He doesn't want to eat the potato cakes, but feels bad knowing his mother worked very hard through her illness to make them.

1. He started as a mean soldier and was able to move up to being a cook. After all the deaths he witnessed he became a lot nicer.

2. He feels a strangeness in his house that he has never felt before.

3. He breaks his cigarettes in half and hands them out to the POWs.

4. Pauls dad doesn't dare ask the doctors at the hospital how much it will cost because he is afraid he won't have enough and they will not preform surgery.

1. Despite being a crude and inconsiderate leader, Himmelstoss becomes the cook and is very generous to the soldiers.

2. This shows how the war is affecting Paul's mental state. He begins to feel secluded from everyone else.

3. The sight of the POW's upsets him because they are ordinary soldiers like him.

4. Seeing the potato cakes reminds him of his mother. He is sent further into depression by the news of his mother's illness.

1.In the begining of the book Himmelstoss was a cruel leader but as time went on he became nicer and cooked for the recruits.
2.Pauls return home was tough because of his experiences in war he is shel shocked and has seen the horrors of war.
3.He is still feeling bad because innocent people are in prison next to him.
4.He didn't ask about the hospital bill because he was affraid they wouldn't perform treatment.

1. Himmelstoss starts out trying to prove that he is better than his soldiers in training but when he see what the front is like, he reurns and respects them.
2. Returning home made dealing with the horrible expierences of war harder for Paul because now he sees something familiar and happy in a life he has given up hope on.
3. The prison next to the training camp made Paul see how pointless the war is and how it makes the same generation of youth fight each other for nothing
4. Paul feels he has no connection with his family or his old life for that matter

1) Himelstoss in previous cheapters was very mean and had strict rules. He then becomes the cook and gives extra food to the soldiers.

2)As Paul visits his home, he is reminded of his childhood and misses his hometown.

3) Paul relizes that all of the prisoners are not bad and he feels bad for them.

4) When Paul brings the food with him,he decides to give some to the soldiers and keeps some for himself. He remembers how hard his mom worked to make the food.
